A few weeks ago I was able to have a fun sisters getaway with all but one of my sisters (there are 6 of us). We all flew home to California for the weekend to see each other, play, visit, and watch my younger sister, Mary, compete in a Distinguished Young Woman Competition (kind of like a beauty pageant for juniors in high school). We had fun doing crafts, eating yummy food, and even had a favorite things party.
I have never been to a favorite things party, but I liked the concept, and thought it would be something fun to do with all us girls. I threw together an invite explaining the idea to the sisters, and everyone got excited about the party. We weren’t sure whether we’d have to squeeze it in on the morning we left or have time beforehand, so we left the time blank.
There were 5 sisters there (we missed Jen far away in Alaska), plus my mom, so everyone thought of one of their favorite item (or items) and brought 5 of that same item with them to the party. We set a limit to $6, but also let everyone know they could share whatever they’d like. This was just a ‘get to know you’ type of party, and we wanted to learn more about what each of us enjoyed and loved. The basis is that everyone brings their own favorite thing and shares that with others.
A few weeks before the party I wrote all the girls an email with a survey to help give them ideas of what their favorite things were, and it also gave me some info to make a few fun games for us all to play during the party.
We ended up hosting the party after church. We had a yummy lunch (Chicken salad croissant sandwiches, chips, and Sean’s pasta salad), and when we sat down I had printed out a table card that had “these are a few of my favorite things” on the top, followed by a list of items. While we ate our lunch we took turns reading what the cars said. For example one card would read: Pinks & Blues, Paris, Ebay, Roses, Lord of the Rings. After reading them all, we all voted on who we thought was described. It was fun to see who we knew automatically and which ones threw us off. (I put down that my favorite flowers are peonies. Apparently I don’t know how to pronounce “peonies”, because that threw off everyone when I read mine. haha.)
After we finished eating we played another trivia game. This time we had a list of possible answers, and whoever got the most answers right, won a prize.
We finished up the party with the fun part – Opening Presents!
We made a play on the song “Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music that says “Brown paper packages tied up in strings. These are a few of my favorite things.” So we wrapped up all our gifts in brown paper and each used different colored ribbon. We each took turn handing ours out, explaining the gift as they unwrapped, and had fun sharing a little bit of us with them.
Gifts included: Lovely Spa Pack from Wendy, Dangly pretty earrings from Julie, Perfume from Mary, Piano recital from Natalie with her two favorite songs, a Brian Regan DVD (I Walked on the Moon) from me, and a leave-in-conditioner from mom that she swears leaves your hair silky smooth.
I think we all had a lot of fun. Especially mom.
